Capitalism and Revolution in Iran brings together some of the most important writings of Bizhan Jazani, one of the founders of the Organization of Iranian Peoples' Fedaii Guerrillas (Fedaii e Khalq). The OIPFG was at the centre of the armed opposition to the Shah. Today it constitutes the major secular socialist opposition to Ayatollah Khomeini's 'rule of the mullahs'. Jazani, whose writings have here been translated out of Farsi, presents an analysis of Iranian history and contemporary society - the rival ' activities of Britain and Russia in the early 20th Century, the rise of new classes, and the final consolidation of a dependent 'comprador capitalism'.

His writings have had a profound impact on the emergent Left in Iran. The present government cannot solve the problems of the Iranian working class. Nor can it meet the demands of thecountry's national minorities. In such circumstances the Fedaii e Khalq, whose mentor Jazani was, assumes a strategic political importance. Jazani's writings give the reader an insight into the Fedaii's understanding of Iranian society.

Jazani's views, as an authentic voice of the Iranian Left, are an important example of Third World socialist thinking. In particular,he analyses the distorted form that foreign-backed capitalism in a Third World country can take as old modes of production and the ruling classes associated with them are elbowed aside.
